About

Speaking of “Renaissance” in art, one would naturally think of that period in art history where masters like Masaccio, Giotto, Bellini, Botticelli, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and many others strove to portray the human form realistically, developing techniques to render perspective and light more naturally with a renewed desire to depict the beauty of nature, and to unravel the axioms of aesthetics.

But here it is all about ten Contemporary Mauritian artists; Mala Chummun Ramyead, Nirmal Hurry, Gerard Foy, Neermala Luckeenarain, Sultana Haukim, Michael Lalljee, Raja Sooranna, Ismet Ganti, Alix Le Judge de segrais and krishna Luchoomun who will, through art, strive to address the notion of Renaissance in a broader perspective, questioning the social, religious and political upheaval in our society.

Is a Mauritian Renaissance possible? What is to be reborn of this emptiness? On what structure will this renewal be based? Who will be the local Medici?

May be this Renaissance, this reawakening, this resurrection, must take place not only in art but in all sphres of our society. Empowered, human is limitless in his capacities for development. Each one of us will have to embrace all knowledge and develop our capacities as fully as possible so as to build up skills in all areas of knowledge, in physical development, in social accomplishments, and in the arts. And then perhaps a Renaissance man will awaken in each one of us.
